I have an issue with Valentine’s Day. It has become, like some of our other holidays, overly commercialized. From every angle, we are made to believe that Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year where we absolutely have to tell our significant other that we love them. Beyond the ridiculous commercialization of this holiday, I have two further issues with it.
First, every day of the year is when we absolutely should tell our significant other that we love them. I’ve got no problem making one day “extra special” but I’ve seen too many people make it the only time they share how much they care. If it isn’t an everyday thing, then the relationship has no business existing.
Secondly, I feel bad for the people who don’t have a significant other. With all of these ads and whatnot swirling around, it becomes easy to feel like you have to be with someone. News flash, no you don’t. There is nothing wrong with being single. In fact, you should check out what Paul has to say on that subject.
Also, it cannot be said that I am one of the angry hoard of single people who want to rant about a day purpose-built around a condition they do not have. I’m engaged. And I celebrated Valentine’s Day with my lady (although admittedly, not on Valentine’s Day).
All that said, if you want to celebrate Valentine’s Day, please do. I’m not saying it is wrong. I am simply advising caution.
